For as long as I can remember I have always loved Alice in Wonderland. Most of us have. In more recent history though, she has gained a following that other fairytale girls just dream of. It borderlines on reverence. I have often wondered why?
Dorothy had cute clothes lolita-esque clothes like Alice, and she even had a dog. Snow White could easily be made steampunk because of the dwarves working in a mine. Sleeping beauty and Cinderella were both also blonde. Belle went a little to the dark side with the Beast. Surely there had to be more to it than a Mad Hatter and a tea party right?
Two days ago I woke up, and as I was working on my new website layout it hit me. Alice was ordinary. She was just a girl, not a princess. Our girl Alice didn't need a prince to save her. She also didn't have a white knight complex and need to save everyone around her. She was minding her own business until the rabbit ran past, and her idle curiosity led her to fall into a whole lot of crazy trouble. We have all been there. She used her good heart and her wits to get herself out of it, and made friends along the way. She stayed true to who she was, good and bad...and came through it just fine. The same way we always hope to.
No wonder we identify with her and want in some small part to be like her. We all yearn for adventure and magic and to get through the crazy days just fine. We don't want to have to be a princess to do it either, or have someone ride in on a white horse and save us.
Alice was just an ordinary girl. And so am I...
